Świnoujście. History

Fort Gerhard is one of the best-preserved 19th-century fortresses on the Baltic Sea. It is located on the right bank of Świnoujście, on Wolin Island, right next to the Świnoujście Lighthouse, the tallest in Poland.

The fort was built in the mid-19th century as part of the Prussian coastal defense system. Today, it operates as an interactive coastal defense museum, where visiting resembles a military training session. Importantly, this isn't a typical museum with display cases—here, history truly comes alive.

Mainly because the tour takes the form of a dynamic training session led by guides in historical uniforms.

What's more:

  • participants receive military commands,
  • learn about the realities of life of 19th century soldiers,
  • they see one of the largest collections of militaria in Poland,
  • can enter authentic casemates and combat rooms.

This makes Fort Gerhard one of the most original tourist attractions in Świnoujście – especially outside the beach season.

The most atmospheric and currently most popular way to reach the fort is by boat. Cruises are organized by the German shipowner Adler-Schiffe. Boats depart from the center of Świnoujście (Wybrzeże Władysława IV) and the journey takes approximately 20–30 minutes.

Firstly, it's a convenient way to get there. Secondly, the cruise itself is an additional tourist attraction. During the trip, you can see:

  • commercial port,
  • LNG terminal,
  • military ships,
  • panorama of the city from the water.

Thanks to this, the visit to Fort Gerhard begins already on board the ship.

Combination tickets (cruise + fort + lighthouse) are often available, allowing you to plan a full day of sightseeing in this part of the city.

The main season runs from May 1st to September 30th. During this time, guided tours are available approximately every 30 minutes.

The fort is also open outside of the season, but hours may vary – so it is worth checking the current schedule before visiting.
